DOIRE – LIOSTA BAILTE FEARAINN | DERRY – LIST OF TOWNLANDS

I’ve been working on this map, with a ton of input from everyone I have encountered. After collating the list 200 placenames in english, DIARMUID MACGIOLLACHOLAIM sat down at the start and wrote out what each name was in paper from the available books he had. Following that, Niall Comer sent his PDF book of the cityside placenames and nearby placenames in the waterside to cross reference. DUBHÁN Ó LONGAIN offered advice on how to translate some names were translations were not readily available. Catherine Pollock and Pádraig MacCongail from the Cultúrlann have been invaluable at adding their advice, and asking really good questions about townlands sizes.

Anger

Hatred erupting volcano, Cannot contain it within,The ash cloud must dissipate,It’s shadow must thin,
Cannot focus in this deluge,Cannot see in it’s din,Must not live on it’s settling,Must not breathe it in.
Must clean up it’s impact,Must wash away it’s sin,Must cool down it’s feeling,Must let the light shine in.

Baile na gCailleach

Bhainfeadh ceol na gcailleach macalla as na coillte i rith an lae,

ag drantán leis na héin agus ceol sruthán.

Dhamhsaigh siad leis na duilleoga á séideadh sa ghaoth,

ag comhréiteach le chéile agus an choill seo.

Bhí draíocht sna crainn agus an fiadhúlra,

cosaint ar an ghrian, an ghaoth agus fearthainne,

bheadh sé an boladh blathanna is fearr an domhain,

agus bhí an brat bláthanna fiáine ar fud na háite.

Cá bhfuil sibh anois?

D’imigh sibh gan tásc ná tuairsc,

níl ach logainm agus monabhar agaibh anois.

Baineann ceol na gcailleach macalla as an tarramhacadam i lár na hoíche.

Spéirbhád

Eitil go hard na spéir ghorm,

Sheolfadh muid ar an spéirbhád dhearg s’agamse,

Bheadh ár seolta bhána líonta sa ghaoth,

Rachadh ar foluain na héin linn,

Díreach spéirghorm ag bun na spéire,

Tchífeadh muid iontas na n-iontas,

Caora a dhéanfadh dínn féin leis an ól,

Thiocfadh cáithníní orainn nuair a chloisfeadh muid an ceol sí.

Rincfeadh muid ar an bhord le luí na gréine,

Bhéarfadh muid na réaltaí thuas san aer dúghorm,

Ansin, bheadh muid ag taisteal abhaile faoi sholas na gealaí,

Athas na cruinne a bheadh orainn.

Ceol na Fearthainne

Ceol na fearthainne ag bualadh ar an díon an chairr

Caisleáin dhubha in ard na spéire

Choscair an toirneach na spéartha

An t-aer atá ar crith

Carr gasta ins na fatha fásgaigh

Spéir dhubh dhorcha, scaladh solais, blosc toirní

Scáil na spéire ar an bhóthar

Neamh agus talamh aontaithe

Bhí an ghrian ag scaladh ar aghaidh

Ar feadh bomaite, chonaic mé fíor dath glas,

Ach ar ais arís ins an anfa dubh

Ceol na fearthainne ag bualadh.

Píobaire Fraoigh

Achan oíche, d’amhrán i bhfad siar,

Scaoil chugainn an t-amhrán binn,

Do ábhann a iompar ar an ghaoth aniar,

Na blianta gan aird, sin é mo chluinstin.

O! Píobaire fraoigh, croch suas í!

Buíon cheoil ag an oíche airneáin,

San áit is breátha faoin réaltaí,

Cuimhne na hóige leis na amhráin.

Uair amháin eile, suantraí,

Ní thiocfadh an tromluí,

Fíoraigh tú mo chuid aislingí,

Codladh lán brionglóidí.

Initial Scoil Requirements 1

Ceart go leor, (OK), so step one. Simple calculation. I need to understand what the average number of pupils and staff are for each school in NI. With that information I should be able to ascertain good practice information on how these numbers determine initial space and area requirements. But that is the next post. Simple maths first.

Based on 2019 information provided by NI Gov in links at foot of this post. There are 1,832 schools in Northern Ireland. 95 are nursery schools, 801 are primary schools, 196 are secondary schools, 39 special schools and 14 independent schools.

Nursery schools = 8022 Pupils divided by 95 Nursery schools = 85 Nursery school Students

Primary schools = 174,523 pupils divided by 801 Primary schools = 218 students average in primary schools in Northern Ireland

Secondary Schools = 142,239 students divided by 196 Secondary schools = 725 students average in Secondary schools in Northern Ireland

Average pupils in each school in Northern Ireland

85 Pupils average in Nursery schools

217 pupils average in Primary schools

725 students average in Secondary schools

Research Project – Designing a Scoil

INTRO

I think I need to write this out to consolidate my thoughts, hence this blog. I have been considering starting a personal hypothetical research project for a few years to better myself as an Architect. I have been down the rabbit hole with these random ‘imagining places as Gaeilge’ for the last 2 years and I have been slowly building a desire to do something similar to what I did for my Architecture Thesis, but perhaps something a bit more detailed and actually design something. Is Ailtire mé i ndiaidh gach ní ( I am an Architect after all ) I think after all this time, I understand the problems a bit better and I think it might be beneficial to do research on how to design a Naiscoil, Gaelscoil and Meanscoil. (Irish Medium Education schools).

OVERARCHING GOAL

I have realised that if you want to revive a language, you have to really invest in language medium education, therefore I think that is where I want to focus my design research. I realise a lot of people have their reservations about Irish Medium education, especially the people closest to me, for fear that the children will be at a disadvantage to pupils who learn with an abundant resource filled English medium school. That is not going to hold me back from this investigation.

WHAT IS IRISH MEDIUM EDUCATION?

NI Government says: “Irishmedium education is education provided in an Irish speaking school.”and in my owns words, Irish medium education is learning through the medium of Irish, and as well as that you cover English. So in essence it is a bilingual school. It appears as well as that, Irish Medium schools are also integrated, which is a plus.

IMPROVE AS AN ARCHITECT & AS A PERSON

I think and hope this might help me become a better Architect. In terms of educational design, I have been part of a design team in the past 4 years that looked at Leatherhead sports centre in Surrey when I worked with FBs in NCUT. The incredible Architect Alison Austin and Technologist Jamie Collins taught me loads when I helped them with this project. See link: https://www.ribaj.com/buildings/regional-awards-shortlist-2020-south-east-faulknerbrowns-architects-school-st-johns-school-sports-centre. I have also worked on a nursing school in Sunderland University. From these experiences, I think collaborative research with the user is the number one priority.

FIRST STEP

I think the first step is to explore what a school would need, and  develop a good detailed and robust BRIEF. To do this, I think it is important to do collaborative research and talk to cúpla Múinteoir (Couple of teachers and perhaps students). I also need to determine a number of pupils, students and staff for this hypothetical school in order to create a table of areas and spaces that this school would require. I think I will take this at a slow pace, and research spaces through drawings and diagrams the way you would if you were designing something with a huge budget and a lot of time.

ADVICE?

Any advice, give me a shout, I feel like I’m shooting in the dark a little, hoping this could be fun.

BULLET POINTS FOR FUTURE TOM

1. The school’s ETHOS and the PRINCIPLES of teaching through Medium education.

2. PRECEDENTS: Good example – Avanti Architects – Trumpington Community College in Cambridge, UK – Unit for students with autism and a community sports facility.

3. THE BASICS: Temperature, light, air and acoustics are the basics of educational design to optimise learning and teaching. It is also important to include flexible spaces and rooms that allow for individualistic needs and approaches to learning, as no one child or teacher or staff member is the same. Ownership and pride of the classroom by everyone of their classroom. This can be how effectively a space allows for the adaptable display of people’s work and achievements through their learning or something as simple as a name peg on a coat hook or seating space. CONTEXT is KING/QUEEN, so I need to pick a hypothetical site in the real world.

4. Impact of DIGITAL and INTERNET TECHNOLOGY and catalyst that is Covid 19/Corona Virus Lock-down to education.
